IS Bush really afraid that US teams will be beaten by the Cuban teams or that some over paid and steroid stoked player will defect there?
I think it is silly to deny Cuba access to the World Games because that is the basis of cultural engagement that normally has been a very effective way of demonstrating the advantages of our system.
It also has triggered the defection of some pretty good players that jumped ship and came to the US to play. :)
Does anyone else think this is just another example of this administration shooting itself in the foot and hitting some innocent bystander?

U.S. Shuts Cuba Out of Baseball Classic

NEW YORK (AP) -- The U.S. government is keeping Cuba out of the inaugural World Baseball Classic, citing the standing embargo against the communist island nation.
The Treasury Department told Major League Baseball of its decision Wednesday, according to Pat Courtney, a spokesman for the commissioner's office.
The sport's first World Cup-style tournament was jointly organized by the commissioner's office and the players' union. It includes 16 teams and runs from March 3-20 in the United States, Puerto Rico and Japan.
Organizers will work to have the decision reversed, said Paul Archey, the senior vice president of Major League Baseball International, and Gene Orza, the chief operating officer of the Major League Baseball Players Association.
A permit from the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control is necessary because of U.S. laws governing certain commercial transactions with the Fidel Castro-controlled nation.

Sadly this sounds just like Castro's decision in a real negative way.

We are becoming more and more like them, not setting the example for how to be better than them.

Re: Bush leaguers scared of Cuban players?
Thu, December 15, 2005 - 8:05 AMI know, this shocked the shit out of me!
This is some message to be sending the world:
It is okay to illegally detain and torture Afghan and Iraqi POWs from a war that was founded on fabricated lies at a shady US military base in Cuba that according to the UN has no reason to be there... rather then let Cuban baseball players participate in the WBC. -

Re: Bush leaguers scared of Cuban players?
Sat, December 17, 2005 - 12:31 PMI was finally beginning to belive that The World Baseball Classic was going to be something special but if the Cubans don't play that will ruin it for me. Somebody explain the politics behind this. Why is the Bush administration able to block the Cubans? -
-
Re: Bush leaguers scared of Cuban players?
Sat, December 17, 2005 - 5:35 PMWell, because we've had an embargo against the Cubans since the 50s. It's them or us. I don't agree with it, but that's the facts. -

Re: Bush leaguers scared of Cuban players?
Sat, December 17, 2005 - 5:56 PMThat's kind of silly Kelly. We have had all kinds of cultural exchanges over that time as well as competitions in the Panama Games and others events.
This is just a pathetic attempt at more blind parochialism on the part of the Bush Leaguers. It doesn't even serve the purpose of isolating the Cubans it just serves the purpose of making us look more foolish around the world and preventing constructive engagement with Cuba.
The embargo has never been absolute. It was about trade, not to deny the exchange of culture or sports. -

Sun, December 25, 2005 - 11:54 PMSince this whole thing is about money, the Cubans have said they'd donate any proceeds to the Katrina victims. What a sweet little fuck you to "our" government. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Bush leaguers scared of Cuban players?
Mon, December 26, 2005 - 5:56 AMToo bad. Cuba needs oil. Then we'd put up with all kinds of shit. Hell they could even hijack some planes and crash'em into some of our buildings and we could blame it on Haiti and go to war with The Domincan Republic. Then we would have explain to Bush the difference betwen Tourist and Terrorist. -

Re: Bush leaguers scared of Cuban players?
Thu, November 16, 2006 - 8:00 AMLaz you are so right, America needs to stop the Embargo and recognize Cuba. We don't need to hold 50 year grudges on one of our closest neighbors just because they defied us and are so called communists. The reason Cuban players are so good is because they have nothing else to do but play when they are growing up. The same is true of all the former colonies when it comes to internatiional games such as baseball, soccer and Rugby. The Imperialists need to wake up to the modern age. -
