Watching the Cubs OBLITERATE the Marlins tonight, I started thinking about what the rarest events in the game were. Here's my shortlist in a guessed at order of rarity...
The Shutout
The No-Hitter
The Triple Play
The Cycle
The Perfect Game
What else?

Re: The rarest events in the game..
Tue, June 14, 2005 - 9:55 PMThe rarest of rare has to be:
Coming back from 0-3 in the ALCS to win the series 4-3... over the Yankees no less!
Oh wait, you meant in a single game didn't you?
;)
cheers,

Re: The rarest events in the game..
Wed, June 15, 2005 - 6:00 AMThere may be a more recent one, but because I'm a Phillies fan, Mickey Morandini's unassisted triple play immediately came to mind. 1992
» September 20, 1992: Phillies 2B Mickey Morandini becomes the 9th player in history to turn an unassisted triple play in Philadelphia's 13 inning 3–2 loss to the Pirates. With runners on 1st and 2nd in the 6th inning, Morandini caught Jeff King's line drive, stepped on 2nd to double up Andy Van Slyke, and tagged out Barry Bonds, who was running from 1st -

Re: The rarest events in the game..
Wed, June 15, 2005 - 12:38 PMRandy Velarde did it, I think he was with the As at the time.
Also to add to the list Two Grand Slams in a game and Two Grand Slams in an inning.

Re: The rarest events in the game..
Wed, June 15, 2005 - 1:16 PM» May 29, 2000: The Yankees defeat the A's Olivares, 4-1, on Pettitte's 2-hitter. In the 6th inning, Oakland 2B Randy Velarde turns an unassisted triple play, just the 11th in history, on a line drive by Shane Spencer. With runners on 1st and 2nd running with the pitch, Velarde tags Jorge Posada as he nears 2B, then touches the bag to retire Tino Martinez. In 1995, while with the Yankees, Velarde turned an unassisted triple play against the Dodgers in spring training following the strike.

Re: The rarest events in the game..
Wed, June 15, 2005 - 2:26 PMBilly Mueller hit two back-to-back grand slams in consecutive plate appearances in this game:
www.1918redsox.com/pedro/20.../0729.htm
How's this though: he did it as a switch hitter... from both sides of the plate!
He added another paltry solo ding-dong later, but the switch hit grand slams in consecutive at-bats has to be some kind of all-time rarity. -

Re: The rarest events in the game..
Wed, June 15, 2005 - 3:19 PMYeah I think that was the year he won the batting title, batting most of the year in the 8-slot. Pretend you're Grady Little for a second: "well he has switch hit power to all fields, oh and he's leading the majors in batting average, let's just keep him in the 8 slot for now"... wtf!?!?! -

Re: The rarest events in the game..
Wed, June 15, 2005 - 3:59 PMWill Clark hit his 1st homer off of none other than Nolan Ryan. In the early 80's, Mike Ivie hit two grand slams in one game for the Giants.

Re: The rarest events in the game..
Wed, June 15, 2005 - 1:19 PMI know Von Hayes hit 2 HR in an inning when he first came to the Phils. It wasn't 2 Grand Slams, though it was one of the highest scoring games I've ever seen.
June 11, 1985: Von Hayes becomes the first ML player ever to hit two home runs in the first inning, leading off with a home run, off Tom Gorman, and capping a 9-run outburst with a grand slam, as the Phillies go on to rout the Mets 26–7. Mets relievers Joe Sambito (3 innings) and Calvin Schiraldi (1.1 innings) both give up 10 runs apiece. The 26 runs in one game is a club record and the most in the National League since 1944 -

Re: The rarest events in the game..
Mon, June 20, 2005 - 6:08 AMI'm guessing this has never happened and the odds that it would must be staggering - the homerun cycle, meaning a grand slam, 3 run, 2 run and solo, all in one game. -
-
Re: The rarest events in the game..
Mon, June 20, 2005 - 8:30 AMI was watching a Dodger game recently and saw someting that is indeed rare seems to happen once a year or two.
The first baseman threw his glove at the ball knocking it out of the air. Play was stopped all runners advance a base -

Re: The rarest events in the game..
Mon, June 20, 2005 - 8:14 PMhow about a pitcher pitching a complete game no hitter and losing the game? i think it happened in the 90s with the indians vs the angels (anyone) the indians pitched a no hitter losing the game 2-1. any one verify this?????
another would be stealing you way home from 1st base (stealing 2nd, 3rd and home)
i think ty cobb holds that record, but cant recall it happening ion the recent future.
and my last rarity would be the intentional walk with the bases loaded. i think it last happened to barry bonds. -

Re: The rarest events in the game..
Tue, June 21, 2005 - 9:11 AMThe Yankees Andy Hawkins or Dave Lapoint (I can't remember which) threw a no-hitter and lost in the early 90s to the White Sox. A couple of walks and an error on a dropped fly ball lost the game if I remember correctly. -

Sun, July 3, 2005 - 5:22 AMhitting that homer, basses fully loaded and the stadium is all quiet evey fan stunned in excitement. (I used to be a tomboy...daddy made me do little league and my first homer strike in little league age 9 or 10 somewhere around there) I got a pick of this too what a feeling that was... i heard the huaaaaaaas in the crowd and not a sound till i got to home plate...still plays like a dream or something back in my head...

Re: The rarest events in the game..
Sat, July 23, 2005 - 11:08 AMI could look it up myself but I am lazy. You always hear about hitting streaks and Joe D's record of 56 straight and how it might be the hardest record to break, etc. I'm not really interested in debating that. My question is what is the record for a consecutive game hitting streak with at least 2 hits in each game? -
-
Re: The rarest events in the game..
Sun, July 24, 2005 - 12:00 AMwell, i know the record for most consecutive games with three hits, george brett with 6, not sure about the two hit thing

Re: The rarest events in the game..
Mon, July 25, 2005 - 8:40 AMIf I'm reading it right, the Sox have won more Series than anybody but the Cards and Yankees.
-
Re: The rarest events in the game..
Mon, July 25, 2005 - 3:11 PMAll good points, I'm just saying 86 years between championships means it is a rare event. Many times have never won and many teams have suffered droughts, the Cubs stretching for seemingly since the original appearance of Jesus. No need for combat here. -
-
Re: The rarest events in the game..
Mon, July 25, 2005 - 6:03 PMoh no nocombat but I do contend that the brewers winning one is more rare or the tigers for that matter. -

Re: The rarest events in the game..
Mon, July 25, 2005 - 7:07 PMYou are correct coach, I would have to say the worst would be both teams from Chicago. What an embarrasment. White Sox are giving it their best this year but we'll see what happens in October. -

Re: The rarest events in the game..
Mon, July 25, 2005 - 8:40 PM2 switch hitters on the same team hit home runs from both sides of the plate in the same game. Yankeeeeees Bernie Williams and Hip Hip Jorge Posada. -
